Afternoon Hush explores the quiet beauty of an ordinary architectural environment during a moment of stillness. Familiar forms, buildings, windows, arches, sky, and sunlight, are reduced into a simple visual world where everyday activity seems to have temporarily disappeared.
 
Project Description
 
There are moments when a familiar place suddenly feels different simply because everything becomes quiet.
Afternoon Hush captures one of those moments. The artwork does not represent a specific city or location. Instead, it creates an imagined architectural environment that feels recognisable while remaining slightly removed from everyday life.
The buildings remain, the sunlight remains, and the sky remains, but the movement is gone. Without people or activity, the architecture becomes the subject itself, allowing space, colour, and light to create a feeling of pause.
As part of The Quiet World series, Afternoon Hush explores the quiet moments hidden within ordinary surroundings, moments that are often overlooked simply because nothing appears to be happening.
 
Visual Narrative
 
The composition is built from simplified architectural forms, including arches, walls, openings, and overlapping planes. These elements occupy the lower portion of the artwork, creating a layered sense of foreground and distance.
The large dark arch on the right provides visual weight, while the smaller forms on the left create rhythm and depth. Diagonal planes guide the eye gently through the scene without introducing visual urgency.
Above the architecture, the expansive pale sky creates openness and breathing space. A small golden sun becomes a quiet focal point, balancing the heavier architectural forms below.
The absence of people is intentional. The empty environment allows the viewer to experience the architecture, sky, sunlight, and space without distraction.
 
Neuroaesthetic Approach
 
The composition uses simplified geometry, broad colour fields, and generous open space to create a visually calm environment. The large pale sky provides visual breathing room, while the architectural forms establish a stable lower structure.
The small golden sun creates a gentle focal point without becoming dominant. Warm ochre, beige, terracotta, and coral tones create visual warmth, while deep blue and charcoal provide contrast and grounding.
The restrained visual complexity encourages slow observation, allowing the eye to move gradually through the architectural forms and open sky.
