Band of Blue
The Luminous Void Series
Overview
Band of Blue explores the relationship between colour, structure, and surrounding space through a restrained geometric composition. A series of horizontal bands occupies the centre of the work, suspended between a pale open field above and a deep blue lower plane. The limited arrangement creates a quiet sense of distance, balance, and visual suspension.
Project Description
The work treats the colour band as both structure and atmosphere. Blue functions not simply as a background colour but as a spatial and emotional foundation beneath the central forms. The open composition allows the bands to suggest a horizon, distant structure, geological layering, or an abstract spatial system without defining a single interpretation.
Visual Narrative
The eye first encounters the concentrated horizontal bands at the centre of the composition. From there, the surrounding negative space expands the visual field, creating a sense of distance. The darker blue lower plane provides grounding, while the pale upper area introduces openness.
The central bands remain deliberately restrained, allowing their spacing, proportion, and slight variations to create rhythm without visual complexity. The result is an environment that feels suspended between structure and emptiness.
Neuroaesthetic Approach
The composition uses horizontal alignment, repetition, controlled contrast, and generous negative space to create visual stability. Horizontal forms can support a slower visual reading, while the large areas of uninterrupted space reduce competing visual information.
The contrast between the pale upper field and deep blue lower plane establishes a clear tonal hierarchy. Blue introduces a cool, quiet visual atmosphere, while the limited colour variation within the central bands maintains coherence. The combination of predictable structure and open space encourages extended observation without requiring the viewer to decode a complex scene.
Artistic Approach
Band of Blue is developed through a minimalist digital art practice based on constructing, refining, and layering simplified geometric forms. Digital tools provide precise control over alignment, spacing, scale, proportion, and colour relationships.
Rather than adding detail, the work reduces the composition to essential elements: bands, fields, proportion, colour, and negative space. Small variations in the horizontal forms prevent mechanical repetition and introduce a subtle visual rhythm.
Interior Aesthetic
The restrained geometric structure and deep blue palette allow Band of Blue to work naturally within contemporary and minimalist interiors. Its horizontal composition can complement clean architectural lines while its open negative space prevents the artwork from becoming visually heavy.
