Band of Burgundy

The Luminous Void Series

Overview

Band of Burgundy explores the relationship between colour, geometric structure, and spatial tension through a restrained arrangement of horizontal forms. The central bands sit between a pale open field and a deep burgundy lower plane, creating a composition that feels quiet, structured, and slightly enigmatic.

Project Description

The work considers colour as a spatial and emotional force. Burgundy introduces a deeper warmth than the cooler variations within the series, giving the lower field a greater sense of density and presence.

The central bands appear to exist between two different visual conditions, light and darkness, openness and weight, surface and depth. Rather than representing a particular landscape or architectural setting, the composition remains intentionally undefined. The bands may suggest a distant horizon, layered material, an abstract structure, or something entirely internal.

Visual Narrative

The composition is organised around a compact horizontal structure positioned between two larger colour fields. The pale upper area creates openness, while the burgundy lower plane provides visual weight.

The central bands function as a transition between these two conditions. Their measured horizontal arrangement creates rhythm, while variations in length, position, and form prevent the structure from becoming completely static.

The surrounding negative space gives the central elements room to exist independently, allowing the viewer's attention to move between the bands and the larger fields surrounding them.

Neuroaesthetic Approach

The artwork uses horizontal alignment, repetition, proportion, and controlled negative space to establish visual order.

The pale upper field provides a spacious area with low visual density, while the deep burgundy region creates a stronger visual anchor. The central bands connect these contrasting areas and establish a gradual transition between openness and visual weight.

Burgundy introduces a deep red-violet quality that provides warmth and contrast without requiring highly complex forms. Subtle variations within the central bands create controlled visual novelty, preventing the repeated structure from becoming purely mechanical.

The balance between predictable horizontal rhythm and small asymmetrical changes encourages gradual visual exploration.

Artistic Approach

Band of Burgundy uses digital minimalism to explore how a limited number of visual elements can generate a sense of space without depicting a recognisable subject.

The composition is constructed from colour fields, horizontal bands, proportion, spacing, and negative space. Digital tools allow these relationships to be precisely controlled while preserving the simplicity of the overall structure.

The work demonstrates how changing a dominant colour can alter the perceived emotional and spatial character of a related geometric composition.

Interior Aesthetic

Band of Burgundy works particularly well in interiors that use warm neutrals, deep red-violet accents, and restrained geometric artwork.

It can complement:

  • Contemporary interiors
  • Minimalist spaces
  • Japandi interiors
  • Modern architectural interiors
  • Warm neutral interiors
  • Luxury residential spaces
  • Gallery-inspired spaces
  • Sophisticated living rooms
  • Creative studios and offices
  • Design-focused interiors

Its burgundy and pale neutral palette can provide a distinctive focal point against cream, beige, warm white, charcoal, or muted earth-toned walls.
