Counterpoise
Style: Field Modularism
Overview
Counterpoise explores visual equilibrium through contrasting geometric forms, colour fields, and carefully positioned modules. A dominant curved structure interacts with smaller, detached elements, creating a balance shaped by differences in scale, position, and visual weight rather than symmetry.
Project Description
The artwork examines how distinct forms can establish equilibrium while retaining their individual identities. The expansive curved structure occupies the upper field, while a solitary circular point and separated geometric modules introduce counterbalancing elements. Their relationships reveal how visual stability can emerge from contrast, distance, and proportion.
Visual Narrative
A broad pale curve moves through the upper composition, framed by ochre and burgundy regions against a deep plum background. A small dark circle establishes an independent focal point. Below, detached black, ochre, and burgundy modules form a secondary arrangement, creating a visual dialogue between the concentrated upper structure and the more dispersed lower field.
Field Modularism
Counterpoise applies the principles of Field Modularism through the deliberate arrangement of distinct geometric modules across an open visual field. Curved and angular boundaries, contrasting colour planes, varied proportions, and positive spacing establish relationships between separate elements. Balance emerges through their distribution and interaction, allowing the composition to remain cohesive without relying on mirrored forms or conventional symmetry.
Neuroaesthetic Approach
The composition combines recognisable geometric structures with controlled variation in scale, position, and colour. The dominant curved form provides a clear visual anchor, while the isolated circle and detached modules introduce measured shifts in attention. Generous negative space supports perceptual clarity, creating an experience that feels structured, balanced, and contemplative.
Artistic Approach
Developed through digital composition, Counterpoise reflects a disciplined exploration of geometric relationships. Precise control over proportion, alignment, colour, and spacing allows contrasting forms to retain their individuality while contributing to a unified visual structure. The work treats balance as a relationship between elements rather than a condition of symmetry.
