Datum

Style: Field Modularism

Overview

Datum explores how reference points, directional boundaries, and linear divisions establish order within a geometric field. A circular element, intersecting planes, and parallel bands form a composition organised through alignment, position, and spatial relationships.

Project Description

The artwork examines how individual elements acquire position and significance through their relationship with a larger structure. A diagonal boundary and vertical divisions organise the upper field, while a circular element introduces a distinct point of reference within the geometry. Beneath this structure, horizontal bands establish a separate yet connected linear system.

Visual Narrative

The upper field is divided diagonally between a dark region and a dominant blue plane. A narrow vertical module intersects the composition, while an outlined circle creates a focal reference within the blue area. Below the main structure, parallel horizontal bands form a measured linear arrangement, contrasting with the angular geometry above.

Field Modularism

Datum applies Field Modularism through the organisation of geometric modules around reference, alignment, and spatial position. The diagonal boundary establishes direction, vertical divisions create structural relationships, and the circular element introduces a distinct geometric reference. The lower horizontal bands extend the composition through repetition and measured spacing, connecting contrasting systems within a unified visual field.

Neuroaesthetic Approach

The composition balances structural clarity with visual variation. The diagonal boundary introduces directional movement, while the circular outline provides a recognisable focal point. Deep navy and black establish visual stability, and contrasting blue regions create selective emphasis. The transition from concentrated upper geometry to open lower space supports a measured visual rhythm.

Artistic Approach

Developed through digital composition, Datum uses geometric modules, angular planes, outlined forms, and repeated horizontal lines. Precise control over alignment, proportion, spacing, and negative space establishes relationships between the principal geometric structure and its surrounding field.
