Extrapolation

Style: Field Modularism

Overview

Extrapolation explores how geometric relationships extend beyond the boundaries of an established structure. Diagonal divisions, nested outlines, contrasting colour planes, and detached modules form a visual system that connects defined geometry with implied continuation across an open field.

Project Description

The artwork investigates how relationships can persist beyond the physical limits of the forms that establish them. Diagonal divisions introduce directional movement, while nested right-angle outlines create recurring structural connections. Below the main geometric field, detached modules echo the colours and proportions of the upper composition, extending its visual language across negative space.

Through this arrangement, Extrapolation examines continuity as a relationship between forms rather than a requirement for physical connection.

Visual Narrative

The principal rectangular field is organised through diagonal boundaries that divide deep navy, yellow, and bright blue regions. These contrasting planes establish directional movement within the composition. Nested right-angle outlines occupy the upper-right and lower-left regions, creating a recurring geometric structure that connects different areas of the field.

Beneath the main structure, detached blue, yellow, and dark vertical modules occupy distinct positions. Their separation introduces an interval of negative space, while their colours and geometric qualities echo the arrangement above. The eye moves between the defined structure and its detached elements, recognising continuity through visual correspondence.

Field Modularism

Extrapolation applies the principles of Field Modularism through the interaction of diagonal planes, nested outlines, contrasting colour modules, and deliberately distributed negative space. Diagonal boundaries establish directional relationships, while repeated right-angle structures provide visual continuity. Detached modules extend these relationships beyond the principal geometric field, demonstrating how proportion, colour, and repetition can connect spatially separated forms within a unified visual system.

Neuroaesthetic Approach

The composition combines clear geometric boundaries with directional variation and contrasting colour relationships. The dark navy field establishes visual stability, while yellow and bright blue attract attention to specific regions. Repeated outlines provide recognisable structural cues, and the detached modules encourage the eye to move between areas of concentration and openness. This balance between order, contrast, and spatial separation creates a focused and contemplative visual experience.

Artistic Approach

Developed through digital composition, Extrapolation explores the extension of geometric relationships through precise control of proportion, direction, alignment, and colour. Diagonal planes introduce tension within the rectilinear structure, while nested outlines establish repetition. Detached modules carry selected geometric and chromatic qualities into the open field, creating continuity without requiring physical contact between forms.
