Inlay
Style: Field Modularism
Overview
Inlay explores the relationship between embedded geometric forms and the larger structures that surround them. Nested rectangular outlines, contrasting colour blocks, a circular motif, and detached modules create a composition in which individual elements occupy distinct positions while contributing to a unified visual system.
Project Description
The artwork examines geometric integration through the relationship between containment and separation. Some forms appear embedded within larger boundaries, while others extend beyond the principal structure or remain detached beneath it. Their placement establishes a relationship between inclusion and independence, demonstrating how position and spatial context influence the identity of individual elements.
Visual Narrative
The upper region is organised around a blue rectangular field containing nested right-angle outlines and contrasting orange modules. These elements create the impression of geometric forms fitted within a larger framework.
A circular motif introduces curvature into the predominantly rectilinear arrangement. On the right, a strong vertical orange region adds visual weight and balances the smaller orange accents distributed across the upper field.
Below the principal structure, detached blue and orange rectangles occupy separate positions within the open space. Their placement establishes a secondary rhythm and extends the geometric composition beyond the boundaries of the main field.
Field Modularism
Inlay applies Field Modularism through the interaction of nested structures, contrasting modules, and spatial separation. The outlined rectangles establish relationships of containment, while the orange and blue elements create connections through colour, position, and proportion. The circular motif introduces geometric variation, and the detached lower modules extend the visual system into the surrounding negative space. Together, these relationships create coherence without requiring physical contact between every element.
Neuroaesthetic Approach
The composition balances visual organisation with spatial openness. Nested outlines provide predictable geometric structure, while contrasting colour blocks introduce variation and selective emphasis. The circular motif offers a change in visual direction, and the detached modules encourage the eye to move beyond the central structure. The pale background preserves visual breathing room, creating a measured experience between containment and openness.
Artistic Approach
Developed through digital composition, Inlay uses rectangular modules, nested outlines, circular geometry, and contrasting colour areas. Repetition establishes continuity, while variations in scale, colour, and placement distinguish individual components. Precise control over alignment, proportion, and negative space connects the contained forms with the independent modules below.
