Modulation
Style: Field Modularism
Overview
Modulation explores how colour variation transforms the visual intensity of an established geometric structure. Intersecting rectangles, outlined forms, and detached modules maintain a consistent spatial organisation, while a vivid pink element introduces a distinct shift in emphasis. The work examines how a single variation can influence the perception of an entire composition.
Project Description
The central idea of Modulation is variation within a consistent system. A vivid pink module interrupts the established palette of cobalt blue, orange, and dark geometric fields, changing the composition's visual energy without disrupting its underlying structure. Colour becomes a means of transformation, demonstrating how subtle changes within an organised system can produce a different perceptual experience.
Visual Narrative
The eye is drawn toward the vivid pink module before moving through the outlined rectangles and surrounding colour fields. Attention then extends toward the smaller detached elements below, where recurring colours establish continuity across the open space. The composition reveals how one distinct variation can reshape the visual hierarchy while preserving the relationships between individual forms.
Field Modularism
Within Field Modularism, geometric modules are arranged across an open field to establish relationships through colour, proportion, alignment, and spatial rhythm. In Modulation, the underlying geometry remains consistent while the pink module introduces a new point of emphasis. The contrast demonstrates how colour can modify visual weight and reorganise attention without changing the structure of the system.
Neuroaesthetic Approach
The artwork combines geometric order, colour contrast, repetition, and negative space to balance familiarity with visual novelty. The established rectangular framework provides recognisable structure, while the vivid pink module attracts attention through its contrast with the surrounding palette. Repeated colours connect separate elements, allowing the eye to explore the composition while retaining an overall sense of coherence.
Artistic Approach
Modulation is developed through a digital art practice based on Field Modularism, using rectangular modules, outlined geometry, colour fields, and separated forms. Precise control of alignment, proportion, spacing, and colour allows a single chromatic variation to transform the visual emphasis while preserving the composition's structural integrity.
