Nesting

Style: Field Modularism

Overview

Nesting explores the relationships between geometric structures that occupy, surround, and correspond with one another within a shared visual field. Nested outlines, contrasting colour planes, and diagonal divisions establish a composition shaped by containment, repetition, and spatial continuity.

Project Description

The artwork investigates how one geometric structure can exist within the framework of another without losing its distinct identity. Repeated right-angled outlines establish relationships of enclosure and correspondence, while a diagonal plane and contrasting triangular form introduce directional variation. Together, these elements examine how boundaries can separate individual structures while maintaining their connection to a larger composition.

Visual Narrative

The upper field brings together dark rectangular structures and nested corner outlines, intersected by a diagonal division between deep blue and turquoise regions. Fine linear boundaries distinguish the geometric layers, while ochre introduces a contrasting accent. Below, separated horizontal bands establish a secondary rhythm, extending the composition into the open field. The eye moves between enclosed structures, diagonal transitions, and parallel lines, discovering relationships through repetition and variation.

Field Modularism

Nesting applies the principles of Field Modularism through the arrangement of distinct geometric modules within a larger spatial framework. Nested outlines establish internal relationships, diagonal boundaries introduce directional contrast, and horizontal bands create an independent rhythm in the lower field. Differences in colour, orientation, and proportion allow the modules to retain their individual identities while contributing to a cohesive visual system.

Neuroaesthetic Approach

Recognisable geometric boundaries and repeated outlines provide perceptual structure, while diagonal divisions and contrasting colour planes introduce visual variation. The interplay between enclosed forms and open space encourages the eye to move between detail and the composition as a whole. This balance between order and variation creates a focused, structured, and contemplative visual experience.

Artistic Approach

Developed through digital composition, Nesting uses geometric modules, nested linear structures, angular colour planes, and parallel bands to explore relationships between containment and continuity. Precise control over proportion, alignment, spacing, and contrast allows complex interactions to emerge without overcrowding the visual field.
