Overview
 
Refraction explores the change in direction that occurs when light or another wave passes from one medium into another. The work translates this physical phenomenon into a minimalist geometric composition using a pale open field and a concentrated blue geometric region to establish two distinct visual conditions.
Rather than depicting a literal ray of light, the work reduces refraction to four essential elements: movement, boundary, medium, and directional change.
 
Project Description
 
The central idea of Refraction is the transformation of a linear path when it encounters a different medium.
The pale field establishes an open optical condition in which the directional elements appear relatively ordered. The blue geometric region introduces a contrasting field. Within this region, linear movement becomes angled, intersected, and redirected.
Blue therefore functions as more than a colour choice. It establishes a separate visual medium within the composition, creating the condition through which the idea of refraction can be expressed.
The work does not attempt to reproduce a scientific diagram. Instead, a physical principle becomes a framework for translating an invisible optical phenomenon into visible geometry.
 
Visual Narrative
 
The composition begins with relatively direct linear movement across an open pale field. As these visual paths encounter the blue region, their direction changes and becomes more complex.
The boundary between the pale and blue areas becomes an important visual event. It marks the transition between two conditions and provides the point at which the composition begins to shift.
The lower horizontal bands extend the linear structure, introducing a more stable rhythm beneath the directional changes above. Together, these elements create a visual sequence from order to transition and from transition to altered movement.
 
Neuroaesthetic Approach
 
The artwork uses geometric order, directional contrast, colour separation, and controlled repetition to organise visual information.
The pale field provides visual openness, while the concentrated blue region creates a clear area of focus. Intersecting lines introduce controlled complexity without overwhelming the composition. The contrast between stable horizontal bands and changing diagonal directions creates visual variation while maintaining an underlying structural order.
Blue also contributes to the atmospheric character of the work by establishing a cool, concentrated field against the lighter surrounding space. The combination of predictability and directional change encourages the eye to move through the composition rather than remaining fixed at a single point.

Refraction is developed through a digital art practice based on geometric lines, planes, colour fields, and carefully controlled spatial relationships.
The composition begins with linear directional elements before introducing a defined blue field in which their orientation changes. Digital construction allows precise control over angles, intersections, scale, spacing, and alignment.
This precision maintains a connection with the logic of an optical phenomenon while keeping the artwork firmly within an abstract visual language.
