Strata
The Luminous Void Series
Overview
Strata explores the visual relationship between layer, distance, and surrounding space. Rather than filling the composition with repeated forms, the artwork concentrates its structure within a narrow horizontal zone, allowing expansive areas of colour to surround and isolate it.
The result is a quiet composition in which the layers gain significance through the space around them.
Project Description
The idea of strata refers to distinct layers existing one above another. In this work, the layers are not presented as a dense stack. Instead, they appear suspended within a larger field, suggesting that separation and negative space are as important as the forms themselves.
The composition may evoke geological layers, atmospheric bands, or a distant horizon without representing any of them literally. These associations remain open, allowing the artwork to focus on relationships between surface, depth, structure, and space.
Visual Narrative
A compact horizontal structure forms the visual centre of the composition. Several bands align across this central zone, creating order and continuity while subtle variations in thickness, colour, and position prevent the arrangement from becoming repetitive.
Deep plum fields extend above and below the central structure, creating substantial breathing room. This isolation gives the relatively small group of forms a greater sense of scale and presence.
Within the horizontal structure, irregular dark forms interrupt the controlled rhythm. These elements introduce points of visual tension while maintaining the overall stillness of the composition.
The resulting experience is a balance between structured layers and expansive void.
Neuroaesthetic Approach
The composition uses horizontal alignment to establish visual stability and predictability. Repeated bands create a simple rhythm that allows the eye to move naturally across the central structure.
The deep plum surrounding field provides strong visual depth, while the warm yellow and ochre bands create focused areas of contrast. This warm–dark relationship establishes a clear visual hierarchy without requiring complex detail.
Subtle transitional tones soften the boundaries between individual layers, preventing the composition from appearing overly rigid. The large areas of uninterrupted space reduce visual density and give the central forms greater perceptual emphasis.
Together, repetition, contrast, spacing, and negative space create a restrained viewing experience that rewards slower observation.
Artistic Approach
Strata uses minimalist abstraction to explore how layers acquire meaning through their relationship with surrounding space.
The artwork does not literally depict geological formations, landscapes, or atmospheric phenomena. Instead, its horizontal structures allow such associations to emerge naturally while keeping the composition abstract.
The surrounding void is treated as an active part of the composition rather than as empty background. This approach allows the work to explore the relationship between presence and absence, structure and space, layer and void.
Interior Aesthetic
Strata works particularly well in interiors that favour strong horizontal compositions, deep tones, warm accents, and minimal styling.
It can complement:
- Contemporary interiors
- Minimalist spaces
- Japandi interiors
- Modern architectural interiors
- Luxury residential spaces
- Gallery-inspired interiors
- Dark-toned interiors
- Warm neutral interiors
- Creative studios and offices
Its deep plum field and warm ochre structure can create a distinctive focal point against neutral, cream, charcoal, or softly coloured walls.
